All I have to say is I think they're trying way too hard. 'The Giver' is a book loved by millions so much so that most schools these days require it be read by English students in middle and high school. Meaning, easy to mess up and upset fans. This is a common theme among adaptations in the past few years, especially dystopian ones.
With popularity of The Hunger Games series adaptation, seemingly the only YA book to film breakout since Twilight and Harry Potter, it seems like the makers stuck too closely to the structure of those films than create something entirely unique withing the world of 'The Giver.'
For me, unfortunately, I think this adaptation will yet again fall by the wayside joining other box office flops like The Host, Beautiful Creatures, and City of Bones.
