Watch and Discuss: 'The Giver' Movie Trailer

This week's Watch and Discuss is the first official movie trailer for 'The Giver' by Lois Lowry. The way it works is first you watch the video, then discuss in the comments below. Easy as that! check out the trailer below:

My thoughts:
All I have to say is I think they're trying way too hard. 'The Giver' is a book loved by millions so much so that most schools these days require it be read by English students in middle and high school. Meaning, easy to mess up and upset fans. This is a common theme among adaptations in the past few years, especially dystopian ones.

With popularity of The Hunger Games series adaptation, seemingly the only YA book to film breakout since Twilight and Harry Potter, it seems like the makers stuck too closely to the structure of those films than create something entirely unique withing the world of 'The Giver.'

For me, unfortunately, I think this adaptation will yet again fall by the wayside joining other box office flops like The Host, Beautiful Creatures, and City of Bones.

What did you think of the trailer?

Think it will be a good movie?

  1. I agree that they're trying a bit hard, and it looks too glossy to be like the book. Too Hollywood. I really hope that they stick with the book and it actually follows the same storyline, rather than warping it. There is real potential with the giver, a stand-alone dystopia, so I hope they do it justice.
