I am so so excited to bring you my interview with Courtney Cole to talk about both of her very awesome New Adult books, If You Stay and the newly released If You Leave.
Which was harder to write, IF YOU STAY or IF YOU LEAVE?
IF YOU LEAVE was harder, because I needed to do a lot of research about military life and PTSD. With IF YOU STAY, I researched repressed memories, etc, but the storyline was very easy for me to write simply because I knew someone very like Pax. In IF YOU LEAVE, I had to really flesh out that character-- and I had to immerse myself in Gabe's character so that I could get a handle on it. I wanted to do his character justice as my personal tribute to men and women that serve.
Out of all the main characters (Pax, Mila, Gabe and Maddy), which was the hardest to write? The most fun? The most annoying?
Gabe was the hardest, for the reasons that I listed above. Maddy was fun, because she's very similar to me. And Pax was annoying at times because I wanted to reach through the pages and shake some sense into him. I love Pax's character, though. :)
Were there unique challenges when it came to tackling Maddy and Gabe’s issues? If so, how did you deal with them?
The biggest challenge was just trying to get a handle on the military aspect. I dealt with it the only way I knew how-- I dove into research, spending hours and hours. I spoke with veterans, I read books, I sifted through online sites.
Now for a fun one, if you could have dinner at The Hill, what would it be and who would it be with (anyone, living or dead).
Oooh- good question! One person? I would choose my grandma or my dad. They're both dead--- so I would love to have the chance to have one more dinner with either of them. :)
Please, please, please tell me there will somehow be magically more in this series? Because I need it.
Hehe. BEFORE WE FALL (book three) will be out on December 3rd. It's Jacey's story--- and Dominic's. And let me just tell you something about Dom: He's a bad, bad boy.
I am SO EXCITED for more.
