1. What was your inspiration for this royal-riddled book?
I’ve always enjoyed stories about royalty, especially things to do with Queen Elizabeth I. I find that whole time period to be intriguing. This flamed the waves for my interest in modern day royals. I remember the day Princess Diana died and the fact that media played such a large role in the whole tragedy, the way Prince William and Harry were sheltered the best that they could be, and more recently the wedding of Prince William to Kate. I write about things that I find interesting, so I guess it’s a natural transition that I would one day want to write a royal story.
I’m also a big lover of turning fairy tales on their heads. What is Cinderella didn’t want to be saved? What if she hated the very thought of everything that came with royalty? What would force her to accept it anyways? That was the inspiration for Suddenly Royal. That is where Samantha first developed.
2. If you woke up one day to fine you were a princess, how would you react?
Confused! I’d feel very self-conscious. I’d worry about what I said and did with everything. I think I’d also be disappointed if people started treating me differently. In fact, I’d most likely act much like Samantha does in Suddenly Royal. (Though I think I’d enjoy the shopping a little more!)
3. And, if it could be for any country (real or Lilaria), which would it be and why?
Oh, now that’s hard. While I’d love to spend time in England, I don’t think I’d ever want to be a royal there. I’m going with Lilaria. There is more freedom for their royalty, less media attention (except for poor Sam!), and I love the idea that they are so connected with nature. (Not that England isn’t as well.)
4. Now for non-royal question, Sam is all about birds, what is your favorite bird and why?
You might have noticed that the Rousseau family crest has a merlin on it. That’s my little indulgence, because I love merlins. They are small, but fierce! If you’ve ever seen one fly, you’d be amazed by their speed and agility. They are fabulous.
I really love all birds. Song birds are one of my favorite things to wake up to in the morning. But I also adore owls. Beautiful, intelligent creatures!
5. And just for some fun, if you could be one of the Disney princesses, which would you be?
If you mean, which one would I want to be, then I’d have to say Ariel. I love mermaids. (I’ve even written a mermaid book! Flukes.) I would want to be able to switch back and forth between a leg and tail though. There’s too much I’d miss on the land.
If you mean which princess am I most like, that would probably get a different answer. I’d say I’m a bit like Disney’s Pocahontas and Belle combined. In fact, if I couldn’t be Ariel, I’d want to be Belle! Oh, that library! *swoon*
Thank you for having me on your blog today! I had fun answering your questions.
And great having you!!
Samantha Rousseau is used to getting her hands dirty. Working toward a master’s degree in wildlife biology while helping take care of her sick father, she has no time for celebrity gossip, designer clothes, or lazy vacations. So when a duchess from the small country of Lilaria invites her to dinner, Samantha assumes it’s to discuss a donation for the program. The truth will change the course of her life in ways she never dreamed.
Alex D’Lynsal is trying to keep his name clean. As crown prince of Lilaria, he’s had his share of scandalous headlines, but the latest pictures have sent him packing to America and forced him to swear off women—especially women in the public eye. That is, until he meets Samantha Rousseau. She’s stubborn, feisty, and incredibly sexy. Not to mention heiress to an estate in his country, which makes her everyone’s front-page news.
While Sam tries to navigate the new world of politics and wealth, she will also have to dodge her growing feelings for Alex. Giving in to them means more than just falling in love; it would mean accepting the weight of an entire country on her shoulders.
