JK Rowling's New Book Has a Title, Synopsis, and Release Date!

Not too long ago, we were going crazy when JK Rowling announced her "New Book" coming out through Little, Brown. No other details were given at the time, but today LB released the title, synopsis, and release date.

The book is called The Casual Vacancy and will be released on September 27th, 2012. Unlike the latter books in her Harry Potter series, this book will only be a modest 480 pages long.

A synopsis of the book from Little, Brown follows:
When Barry Fairweather dies unexpectedly in his early forties, the little town of Pagford is left in shock.

Pagford is, seemingly, an English idyll, with a cobbled market square and an ancient abbey, but what lies behind the pretty fa├žade is a town at war.

Rich at war with poor, teenagers at war with their parents, wives at war with their husbands, teachers at war with their pupils…Pagford is not what it first seems.

And the empty seat left by Barry on the parish council soon becomes the catalyst for the biggest war the town has yet seen. Who will triumph in an election fraught with passion, duplicity and unexpected revelations?
Blackly comic, thought-provoking and constantly surprising, The Casual Vacancy is J.K. Rowling’s first novel for adults.
What are your first impressions? Are you still as excited for this new book as when she first announced it? Will you still be reading it?

  1. If it's as good as HOT FUZZ without being toooo similar, then it can definitely be fun! Maybe like a darker Vicar of Dibley?

  2. Doesn't sound like my kinda book... I'll probably pass on this one. Kinda sad considering I was so excited when I first heard about it. Then again, I'm not much of a fan of adult books anyway : /

Thanks for the update! Can't say I'm as excited as I was before the synopsis. :( BUT, I may still read it just to see how she handles adult.

  5.  I don't see it being similar to either of those, but maybe that's just me being cynical. I think she's going to go more for the political dram than political comedy.

  6. As much as I adore JK Rowling, but I have to sadly say . . . I'm not as excited now after reading the synopsis. It isn't the book I was hoping for. I'll probably end up reading it . . . who knows.

  7. I'm not so sure after that synopsis BUT I'll give it a try none the less; it's JK Rowling after all. Who knows, it might just be amazing!

  8. Hmm, it's definitely different from what I was expecting! It kind of sounds like those novels I pick up because it garners praise but rarely finish. I'm definitely going to give it a shot though because it's J.K. Rowling.

  9. Honestly? It sounds incredible boring. I'm only somewhat surprised. Rowling once said that she doesn't like fantasy and that before Harry Potter she only wrote mysteries. So it makes sense that she would go back to her first love. I have no intention of reading it at this point; it doesn't sound at all like the sort of book I would enjoy. I'm glad that Rowling is still writing though.

  10.  I agree with you. Boring, but I think I'm still going to give it a try. From the synopsis, I don't think I will like it, but I can't know until I read it for myself. I too am glad she's writing.

  11. I found many problems with her Potter books and stopped buying them shortly after the fifth one came out. After reading that synopsis, I will read it if and only if it's sent to me for review purposes.

  12. I am not to sure about this one as it doesn't sound like something that I would normally read, nor does it really catch my attention. I will probably wait until the price goes down before I give it a go.
