Meeting Up with Carrie Ryan

So today was a good day for us. "Why" You ask? Well, the title gives it away. We got to see Carrie Ryan (NYT-bestselling author of the Forest of Hands and Teeth, etc.). Now, me and Jeremy are no strangers to the awesome that is Carrie Ryan. We go WAY back! Well, not that far, but when FHT came out 2 years ago, me and some friends went to meet her. At the time, I wasn't aware of how great of a person she was, but it became apparent about a nanosecond after we started talking. She was actually the first author I had ever met. I hadn't even read FHT yet, but after meeting her, I knew what she penned would be magic! In a zombie apocalypse sort of way...

Since that fateful day in 2009, I have been to three signings (including today), as well as several times at the Decatur Book Festival. I don't mean to brag, but we're pretty tight lol If she has an event within a two hour drive, we're there. And she knows it. No matter how many times I've seen her, I won't stop. She's just that awesome!

Tonight's even was held at the Hub City Bookshop in Spartanburg, SC. Last year, if you remember, we saw Holly Black and Carrie talk and do a signing there. Hopefully, they'll do another event like that later on this year.

This event was pretty laid back. It was a sort of amoeba event. Free-form, go with the flow, etc. She got up and asked if we wanted to hear her read anything. So Jeremy requested she read from her short story in Enthralled, but she didn't have it with her. Bummer. So instead a question was asked that sparked a novel in spoken word. "Why zombies?" If you've been to one of her events, you've heard the story. And for the sake of those who haven't but want to, I won't be repeating that story here. You need to hear that from her.

Few other questions were thrown out there from: "Can you tell us about your next project?" and "Tell us about how FHT got picked up.". Even one that I'm sure all NYT authors get, "Can you tell what's going to be popular before everyone else?" Like they're all psychics...No. They're time travelers. They have a TARDIS so that they can pick up on the latest trend before others do. I've seen Beth Revis's. It's pretty sweet.

Speaking of Beth Revis, guess who walked into the store before the event started? You like how I gave you the answer before the question? I thought it would be easier that way. I met her back in January when Across the Universe released and she was an overall nice lady. I wasn't expecting her to show up, but it was a nice surprise nonetheless.

Sadly, I forgot to get a picture with Beth, so here's a picture of my friend Travis (Inked Books) with her instead:
So that was how I spent my Monday evening. Not too mundane after all. If you ever have the opportunity to go to one of her events, GO! You won't regret it. She may write dark stories of love, passion, and a zombie return, but she is the nicest lady you could meet. And she's funny. You won't regret it. Not to brag, but I can't wait to see her again in two weeks!! Yeah, you should be jealous.

  1. you guys have no idea how jealous I'm of all of you, and thanks for pointing that out at the end. It somehow brought out the zombie in me. And I do pray, more like "demand" that someday I will meet Carry. Nice post, and OHMYGAGA BETH REVIS!!!

  2. I'm going to read The Dead-Tossed Waves and The Dark and Hollow places and then travel back in time and join you during your amazing evening with Carrie. So don't freak out when you see me.

  3. Fun. I never thought I would like a zombie book, but FHT won me over and made me incredibly sad. #2 is on deck to read this week.

  5. Very jealous (but I have my own NYT Bestseller that I get to see very often- Maggie Stiefvater, lol.)! I've been wanting to meet Carrie for a while but I can never make it to any event she does near me (essentially, northern NC, which doesn't happen often). Here's hoping I get to meet her eventually.
