Review: Bright Young Things by Anna Godberson

Rating: 4/5   Cover: 4/5

The year is 1929. New York is ruled by the Bright Young Things: flappers and socialites seeking thrills and chasing dreams in the anything-goes era of the Roaring Twenties.
Letty Larkspur and Cordelia Grey escaped their small Midwestern town for New York's glittering metropolis. All Letty wants is to see her name in lights, but she quickly discovers Manhattan is filled with pretty girls who will do anything to be a star…
Cordelia is searching for the father she's never known, a man as infamous for his wild parties as he is for his shadowy schemes. Overnight, she enters a world more thrilling and glamorous than she ever could have imagined—and more dangerous. It's a life anyone would kill for . . . and someone will.
The only person Cordelia can trust is Astrid Donal, a flapper who seems to have it all: money, looks, and the love of Cordelia's brother, Charlie. But Astrid's perfect veneer hides a score of family secrets.
Across the vast lawns of Long Island, in the illicit speakeasies of Manhattan, and on the blindingly lit stages of Broadway, the three girls' fortunes will rise and fall—together and apart. From the New York Times bestselling author of The Luxe comes an epic new series set in the dizzying last summer of the Jazz Age.

When I say that this book wasn’t a typical read for me, I really do mean it. I’m not one for many “period pieces” or books not set in the 21st century, but I actually really liked it! This was definitely my first “roaring twenties” book but officially not my last! Anna Godberson’s writing was intriguing and beautiful. She captured the Jazz Age perfectly and brought my imaginations into her story to become a part of it myself!

Before even reading it, I hate to admit I was put off by the fact that it was set in the 20s...and boy was I wrong! The setting was beautiful and the fact that Anna was able to tell three girl’s stories all together and make it flow so flawlessly makes it an even more amazing read!

From the very beginning you are pulled into the lives of Cordelia and Letty as they run away from their small town in Ohio for the glam that is New York City! They want to become stars like the socialites, flappers, and all that jazz only it comes at a high cost that they weren’t expecting. Cordelia’s entire reasoning for coming to the city was to find her long lost father, while Letty began working as a cigarette girl in a local speakeasy. But as the story broadens, you meet more characters and the lives of Letty and Cordelia are spread out and separated.

Bright Young Things is a story that tells of love, loss, and luxury that comes with it’s own difficulties. It has it’s Shakespearean feel and is filled with romance and intrigue! All I can say is I really did love this book! Thanks to Anna for drawing me out of my comfort zone and capturing me from chapter 1! I seriously cannot wait until Beautiful Days is available so I can continue the story. So even if this may not be your “typical” read...get it and read it! I know that you will love it!!

This book was received as a part of a blog tour with Teen Book Scene.

  1. Great review! I haven't really been into any 'period pieces' either, but the 20's have always interested me so I'm excited to read this one!
